Visual C# 2008 Express does not support loading an existing .exe as project. Therefore you get an error opening the public solution and can't run or debug.

As a workaround you can still build the correctly loaded plugins of the solution and then call the CrypWin.exe manually in Windows Explorer. Not very comfy, but works.

Visual C++ 2008 Express on the other hand, supports loading the CrypWin.exe, but of course not the C# plugin projects. That's why developers with VS 2008 Pro need both, the C# and C++ environment installed.

The solution would be to abandon the commercial ribbon component, use an open-source one and make the CrypWin project publicly visible. Unfortunately that's easier said than done.

The public CrypTool 2 solution can now be openend and compiled with the Visual Studio 2010 C# Express version. This closes this ticket.
